Puppy Madness!
June 2005

After we lost Elsie and adopted Lily, we decided we wanted to have two dogs, and that it would be best if they could grow up together. So we started looking for another pup, and pretty soon we felt like we were on a puppy rollercoaster....

Before we even got Lily, Anne called from California to say she had rescued a very young puppy. Once on the road, she bonded with the pup and decided to keep her, naming her Kayden. We adopted Lily shortly thereafter. These pictures were taken at the humane society walk.

Also at the humane society walk, we had a very emotional meeting with Layla - one of Elsie's littermates. Layla's mannerisms were so much like Elsie's... it was very surreal. Hopefully I didn't scare away her owners by bursting into tears when I saw their dog, because I'd really like to see how Layla grows up.

Not long after adopting Lily, we brought Kiwi home. She was very mellow and quiet and liked to follow Ryan around. She'd go anywhere with him as long as there wasn't a leash involved.

Little "P65" and "P75" ~ Lily and Kiwi came from the same shelter, where they were tattooed when spayed. Kiwi quickly got the nickname "P24-7." But we don't need to talk about that.

Lily thought Kiwi made a fantastic playmate. She would get Kiwi going and then play very rough with her. However, when we took Kiwi to the vet for the first time, we found out she had a congenital heart defect. Our vet was confident that she had a good chance at a normal, happy life if she could control her exertions. As in: no living with Lily. I called her shelter manager (who should have known about the problem before Kiwi was adopted out), and she asked us to bring her back so they could find her a better home.

Even with just Lily for Ryan and me, there were still plenty of pups in the family! The other dog in these pictures is Sera, our Mom's 5-year-old Shih Tzu, who was very concerned about all the puppy activity in her house.
